To compete in today’s marketplace, organizations must have the cloud play a significant role in their strategy. Cloud adoption was already on the rise for quite a few years and has been accelerated by the pandemic, which has caused new needs in the cloud management market. Gartner recently released its 2022 Market Guide for Cloud Management Tooling to help organizations choose the right tools for their needs, and we’re pleased Flexera is one of its Representative Vendors. These were selected based on market traction and Gartner client inquiry volume.

Cloud Management Tooling is defined by Gartner as follows: “Cloud management tooling enables organizations to manage hybrid and multicloud services (that is, on-premises, public cloud and edge) and resources. This includes providing governance, life cycle management, brokering and automation for managed cloud infrastructure resources across multiple functional areas.”

Similarly to the recently released Flexera State of the Cloud report, Gartner states that enterprises are stressing their current operational processes and tooling due to the pressing need to support multicloud deployments, whether that need is intentional or not. Flexera found that 89 percent of respondents in 2022 reported having a multicloud strategy. Gartner recommends that organizations should “ensure that tooling addresses aggregation (a consistent view across the cloud environments, single SLA management capability), and integration (a unified layer of abstraction across multiple cloud providers)” because of this when considering options for cloud management tooling.

The main use cases for cloud management tooling continue to be around cloud governance and resource management. Flexera found that a lack of resources is a very significant challenge for organizations at 83 percent of respondents, as is governance at 77 percent. To follow this, Gartner recommends that tooling needs to deliver strong governance controls such as “cost control, best practices, regulatory mandates, etc.”

In their summary of recommendations, Gartner says to “Identify your cloud management functional requirements, using them as the main compass as you navigate this complex market.” This marks the importance of considering  cloud managementcloud cost optimization and cloud migration tooling to ensure a successful journey, no matter where an organization is in its cloud adoption and optimization journey.
