London - Oct 29, 2014 - Secunia, a leading provider of IT security solutions for vulnerability management, has published its latest country report, which reveals the state of security among UK PC users has declined over the last 3 months. 12.6% of users are running unpatched operating systems, up from 9.7% the previous quarter. In addition 1 in 10 third party programs on the average PC are exposed due to not having the latest security updates installed.
Key findings in the report include:
- Oracle’s Java JRE 1.7.x / 7.x tops the list as the UK’s most exposed program. With a market share of 58%, and 145 reported vulnerabilities, 42% of users have not installed the latest updates
- Other programs in the top 10 include Adobe Reader, Apple iTunes and Microsoft Internet Explorer
- 1 in 20 programs on the average UK PC have reached end-of-life, meaning they are no longer supported by the vendor and do not receive security updates
Kasper Lindgaard Director of Research and Security at Secunia commented: “With many widely used programs in the top 10 it is worrying that PC users are exposing themselves by leaving vulnerable programs unpatched – programs which then potentially serve as entry points for malware. We urge users to take a moment to make sure their systems are up to date with the most recent program versions and patches.”
Vendors’ security updates are readily available, however, the average UK user must master 26 different update mechanisms to ensure the latest patches are regularly applied. To simplify this process Secunia recommends users download its free Secunia PSI security tool, which is already used by more than 7 million private individuals globally to detect vulnerable programs and plug-ins. Once installed it can help PC users automatically patch vulnerable programs and stay secure. For businesses use IT security teams can also subscribe to the Secunia CSI.
Secunia’s Country Reports are based on data from scans of thousands of PCs by the Secunia PSI between 1 July and 1 October 2014. It is safe to assume that Secunia PSI users are more secure than the average PC user, therefore these figures can be considered conservative estimates.
