Image: Big Buzz on Microsoft’s MSIX—InstallShield is Ready

We’re pleased to announce the release of InstallShield 2018 R2, which provides easy installation creation and conversion support for MSIX, the latest deployment type from Microsoft. The other big news is a new, easier-to-use InstallShield designer interface that’s all about speed, good looks and simplicity.

The 411 on MSIX

Microsoft’s new packaging format, MSIX, brings together the best of MSI, AppX and App-V into one package and runs applications in their own containers, enabling cleaner installations and uninstalls. InstallShield 2018 R2 supports creating MSIX packages or migrating existing MSI projects effortlessly. With just a few clicks, developers will be able to use existing installations projects to generate MSIX packages.

Create native MSIX packages, build clean installs, and build installations in the cloud with InstallShield from Revenera.

Advantages include:

  • More security, less interference from OS and more stability since apps run in their own containers
  • Simpler deployment and no need to installation guides
  • A transition away from MSI packaging, maintenance and deployment, which is old and cumbersome
  • Eliminates the need for repackaging and compatibility testing in enterprises

In addition to removing the need for repackaging, your customers will also experience benefits.  Since there are no shared DLL issues, app compatibility costs will be reduced.  MSIX packages also perform very clean uninstalls, so there’s no left over issues to clean up.  And then there’s the boost to storage and network bandwidth.  MSIX moves to mainstream in the Windows 10 fall update this year.
