As organizations feel increased urgency to adopt and optimize cloud usage because of the changes to business operations due to the events of 2020, having the right tools for the job has never been more important. Gartner recently released its 2021 Market Guide for Cloud Management Tooling to help organizations choose the right tools for their needs, and we’re pleased Flexera is one of its Representative Vendors. These were selected based on market traction and Gartner client inquiry volume.
In alignment with Flexera’s 2021 State of the Cloud report, enterprises are facing ever-increasing pressure to optimize cloud usage to hit their essential organizational goals. This is largely due to expansion from utilizing a single cloud provider to a multi-cloud strategy in order to “enable better workload matching, improved redundancy and increased agility,” Gartner says. For these reasons, tools with multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud support should be at the top of your list for considered vendors, and also why native cloud provider tooling may not fit your organization as your cloud strategy grows and matures. Flexera’s survey revealed 92 percent of participating enterprises had a multi-cloud strategy.
According to Gartner, “The main use case for governance is shifting around both cost management and security. Enterprises are using governance to ensure that they do not overspend or leave themselves vulnerable to security breaches.” This mirrors what respondents in Flexera’s most recent State of the Cloud Report found, with 81 percent citing cloud security as a top challenge, and 79 percent citing cloud spend governance. Cloud governance is broadly defined as a set of rules and limits that apply spending limitations, access limitations and compliance to these rules. Strong governance features should also be a top consideration for organizations seeking cloud management and migration solutions, as “Improper governance can lead to dissatisfaction with cloud migrations.” In its Market Guide, Gartner recommends, “Define governance based on your specific enterprise requirements by establishing the rules, controls, policies and resolutions to implement your cloud strategy.”
When it comes to recommendations, Gartner also states, “Accelerate cloud success by focusing on the enterprises’s unique requirements and characteristics when choosing cloud management tooling. Do not make assumptions based on perceived industry trends.” This again marks the importance of flexibility and customization in both cloud management, cloud cost optimization and cloud migration tooling to ensure a successful journey, no matter where an organization is in its cloud adoption and optimization journey.
